IBM employed me during the industrial placement year of my degree.
I was a member of a small team responsible for developing an important transaction processing middleware product.
Specific technical skills used and gained include Java, C/C++ and Perl. I was also exposed to Windows NT/2000, Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, AIX & z/OS.
I was able to apply existing knowledge but I also undertook a number of training courses including: Advanced Java Programming, CICS Fundamentals and an Introduction to C.
I was also involved in a number of out-of-work activities, including helping at IBM-run events involving local schoolchildren and organising a team of fellow placement students to take part in a programming competition.
1998 to 1999 - Stock Control Assistant, UCI Logistics Ltd
Tamworth, Staffordshire
Tasks involved the general upkeep of a computerised stock control system for a busy warehouse handling 10,000 pallets.
I played a key role in increasing and maintaining the accuracy and performance of the business to levels exceeding initial targets.
I also spent a large part of the time developing a Microsoft Access-based stock control system which reduced the amount of paperwork and helped to significantly increase warehouse productivity.

Skills

Computing
I have an expert knowledge of Java, PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, CSS and mySQL. I have a good knowledge of Grails and Groovy and Java EE technologies such as Spring and Hibernate. I also have a working knowledge of C, C++, Perl, HTML and various UNIX flavours including AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux and z/OS. I have had experience with web services and have an understanding of AJAX, XML/XSLT, XML/RPC, WSDL, REST and JSON. I am also proficient with Microsoft Windows and Office applications. I am particularly keen to learn new technologies.
For four years I ran a popular science-based website, www.tcaep.co.uk and have since used my own websites to experiment and practice with new technologies, notably earthtools.org and my custom photography website.
I undertook the technical edit of the IRC Hacks book by Paul Mutton and published by O'Reilly.
Communication
At UCI Logistics, I was required to talk with customers on the telephone, helping to negotiate problems with stock and supply. I also have experience at writing technical design documents which were needed during my time at IBM.
Organisation
I am highly organised and dedicated which helped to dramatically improve productivity in the warehouse at UCI Logistics. I also have a keen eye for detail and a commitment to my work. I am willing to effect change where there is a genuine need to do so.
Teamwork
I can work as a part of a group as well as an individual and get along with people. At IBM, there was a specific emphasis on teamwork, more so with the small group I was working with. There was a significant amount of interaction with other members of the team and also with other teams (such as the System Test and Service teams).

Interests and Achievements

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
I have achieved the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Conservation and Charity Work
I have taken part on 13 weeks of National Trust Working Holidays which involve general outdoor conservation tasks at National Trust properties around England and Wales.
Before starting at University I worked with Tamworth Talking Newspaper for the Blind. I developed a database system for them to handle the details of Recipients of the taped newspaper. I was awarded a "Local Heroes" award by the local newspaper, The Tamworth Herald, and Tamworth Borough Council for this work.
Music
I have a passion for all genres of music and also participate in music making by playing the trumpet. While at the University of Kent, I was a member of both the University Concert Band and the University Big Band and was on the committee for the Music Society from 2004 to 2007. I am currently playing with the Bournemouth and District Concert Band.
Travelling
I enjoy travelling, both around Britain and in Europe. I have been to Scandinavia on a number of occasions and visited the USA for six weeks in the summer of 2003.
Photography
I have a passion for taking photographs and do so whenever I get chance. I have had a number of my photographs printed in various publications.
